This is an antique wooden box from the early 1900s, decorated with the pyrography method of burning designs into wood that was popular at the time; this box's design features the head of a medieval knight wearing a helmet. The time period and the curvy, natural style of the feathery decoration around the knight's head indicate this should be categorized as Art Nouveau. The box is done in the style of the Flemish Art Company, but it does not have their stamp nor any artist's name. It has some writing in pencil on the bottom (as most of these boxes do) from the artist or original vendor; among other numbers, there is what appears to be the date of 1907 or 1901. Besides the burned-in design, the wood (a rather soft type of wood) of the box has been hammered into the pebbly texture that typifies the pyrography tabletop boxes from around this time. The box may have been made in the U.S., but some of these boxes also came from Europe (particularly northern Europe) and the style of the penciled numbers on the bottom appear European.The box's red satin lining is still intact, which is rare, and it is in good condition except for the left front corner, where it is pulling away from the side of the box; I have left the box as-is for the buyer to choose whether to repair it. The box itself is also in unusually good condition for its age; it read more
