This is a signed Japanese wood working chisel. The cutting edge is about 1 1/4 inches wide (3 cm) Razor sharp. It will shave hair. (Our final sharpening test) It's an old chisel made with old steel made in the old way with a hardened edge and a softer body laminated on top of the hard steel. You can see the layers of steel when you stone sharpen it. The handle is Indonesian ebony. The whole chisel is 8 3/4 inches (22 cm) long. In the late 1800's when the Samurai were told they could no longer carry their swords, one of the industries to suffer from this edict were the sword makers. They were out of a job. Many of them went from making swords, hammering out the steel layer over layer, to making tools. Many of these tools were made in the same traditional way. This chisel is a part of the legacy of that skill. A serious chisel for anyone who does woodworking. If you like Japanese things, we have other items.
