You have to know your knives pretty well to know the true collectible value of this knife. You might see copes or reproductions since Camillus bought the right to use the name in 1991 but they are not the real McCoy. The western co. was making knives from 1888 to 1980 and were a family business more or less until they closed the doors in 1980 under the name Western states Cutlery. They changed the name from Western in 1920 when partners other than family became involved. Before then they basicly made one type knife under pat. and this is it and the knife was known all over the U.S.A. for its quality, function, and reliability. Kind of a one knife co. but a well made hand made knife and I am putting this one up for auction. I have had it about 40 years myself. I do not know exactly how old it is but it was made before 1920 because of the way its marked. On the blade is stamped western boulder,colo, patt.no.1,967,479 on one side only. It is an 11" solid tang knife with a 7" blade of blued steal and razor sharp although in 40 years I have never sharpened it. although as you can tell it has been sharpened alot at some time. the point is fine no chips or dings in the blade. But at some time it has been used alot. The handle is leather and the hilt is blued steal and the crown is poutier. This knife has been used alot at sometime but it was also taken very good care of like somebody life depended on it. If only knives could talk. This is a piece of American history and very collectible. Good luck and who ever wins it please take good care of it for the second 100 years. Don't forget about my little bonus gifts !!! By the way that is not the knife number they would have been lucky to have made 10,000 at this time by hand that my friends is a " very very " low U.S. pat.number !!!
