Antique Vintage Wooden Deck Chair from the RMS Queen Mary I'm not sure how old this is, but the RMS Queen Mary made its last voyage a long time ago. This is an authentic wooden deck chair that was aboard that ship. It looks like it might be made out of mahogany, or maybe it's made out of teakwood, but to be honest, I'm just guessing; I don't know for sure what kind of wood it's made from. It's not too dark, not too reddish, and not too light. It has two (2) brass plaques on the footrest: one says Queen Mary ; the other says 1 st Class Only . The chair is not broken or damaged in any way, but it does show the normal signs of age. It's scratched in spots, and the brass fittings are somewhat tarnished. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but it appears to me that a good refinisher could make this chair look almost like new. Then again, perhaps it shouldn't be refinished. On Antiques Road Show , they seem to place a higher value on the stuff that's original. And this certainly appears to be all original. The back is adjustable, and it will lay down farther than shown in the picture. It's very strong and sturdy, and it held my 200+ pounds without any indication of stress or strain. And it does fold up for convenient storage. This is a fabulous old deck chair. It's been stored in the rafters of my garage for well over ten years waiting for that perfect place, but I've just never found that spot. Shipping weight is about 30 pounds. The RMS Queen Mary made its maiden voyage on May 27, 1936, and carried its last passenger across the Atlantic Ocean on September 19, 1967 when it made its 1,001st crossing. This great old chair could have been in service any number of years within that time frame, but I cannot say when. Who might have lounged on this chair while gazing over the Atlantic from the 1 st Class deck? The Queen of England, herself, perhaps? Or maybe one of the movie stars from the golden era of Hollywood? Or maybe General Dwight D. Eisenhower or President Franklin Roosevelt, who may have been a passenger on the ship when it was called into duty during World War II, transporting American soldiers across the Atlantic to Europe and back home again at war's end. The stories this chair could tell are probably many, and that's a story in itself. Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a book based around a chair, Grandfather's Chair, and the stories of this Queen Mary deck chair could probably write another - Queen Mary's Chair . Okay, I'm being a bit silly or dramatic, but what a conversation piece this could be. Thanks for looking at my auction, and if you have a perfect place for this chair, please consider bidding. After all, it deserves a lot more, and it could be put into a better place of service somew other than the rafters of my garage. ____________________ ADDED INFORMATION ____________________ My disclaimer and belief of authenticity: Due to an enormous amount of interest and several email inquiries, I feel I must elaborate on my reasons for believing the chair is authentic, and it did originally come from the RMS Queen Mary.. First of all, a disclaimer: I'm not an expert, nor do I claim to be, nor do I have first-hand knowledge of the chair's origins. I have not taken it to a dealer or any other expert to verify the authenticity. I encourage any potential buyer to do his/her due diligence to determine this chair's authenticity. If anyone has any reason to question the authenticity, please email that information to me and I will correct my auction accordingly. I will also be glad to provide more detailed pictures, by email, upon request (at least as detailed as my camera will allow). Having said that, the reasons for my belief of authenticity are as follows: 1. The person I bought the chair from (about fifteen years ago) told me it was a deck chair from the RMS Queen Mary. Under the circumstances of that purchase, I have/had no reason to doubt him. I purchased it from a fellow in Westwood Hills, Kansas (near Kansas City, Missouri) who was managing/running ...
