ANTIQUE VOLAND ANALYTICAL BALANCE C. 1912 With the exception of a few minor scratches that can barely be seen, this balance is darn near perfect. Within a year or two this precision instrument will be a 100 years old. On the technical side, it is 16"W X 19"H X 9"D. Total packaged weight will be about twenty-five pounds. On the drawer bottom is written 103, which may mean either Nov.1903 or maybe Jan. '03. The pans are 2 1/2", which were normally made of German nickle-silver. This size balance is almost always a 100 gm capacity. Sensitivity is 1/10th of a milligram. During cleaning I found a serial #13399. I re-filled the wet "target" style bull's eye spirit level, it had gone dry through the years. Notice the brass leveling screw legs. The case is fashioned from mahogany, with the beautiful high luster French polish finish. The metal parts are solid brass, all the glass is original with that antique wavy appearance. The cabinet work displays the remarkable workings of turn-of-the-century craftsmanship. All the important bearing points are from cut and polished select agate. Voland was one of the "big" five original American balance makers. He actually worked for Thomas Edison at one point in his youth. I will safely pack the balance for secure shipping, usually by UPS Ground. Ignore eBay shipping estimates, they are NEVER correct. I will invoice you promptly, satisfy PayPal within a few days please. This fine combination of cabinetmaking and precision instrument making will display beautifully where ever the finest antiques are appreciated. The balance functions perfectly, just like when it was brand new. Examine the photographs carefully and please review my feedback. I have sold many balances from my collection, and can proudly say that they are all works of art and pieces of history. Nothing makes me feel better than pleasing my buyers, so . Thanks for taking a minute to check out my auction. Good luck.
