I took this cornet to my local music shop and this is what they told me..... What we have here is a 1902 Large Bore "Monarch" model cornet, made by J.W. York and Sons in Grand Rapids, Michigan with original case. "6314" is the serial number. The round valve on the tuning slide is a rotary valve which can change the pitch of the horn from Bb (the pitch of modern trumpets) to A. The mute is an early Conn mute which would have been made in Elkhart, Indiana. In my opinion the cornet is in very good condition for being over 100 years old. The bad.... there is a small crack in the tube by the mouth piece, there are a couple of dents on the bend, and two of the plungers? stick .........I assume a little oil would help. I think this is a fantastic piece. Cornet is being sold as is. Thank you for looking.
