Antique Walnut Washstand/Commode Burl Accents NICE

Up for auction is a delightful Walnut Commode or Wash Stand which probably dates to around the last quarter of the Nineteenth Century. The top of the piece measures 26 1/4 inches by 14 1/2 inches. It stands around 26 1/2 inches tall. Its fairly solid for its age. The hardware has obviously been replaced and is reproduction. The left door has a slight vertical split in the wood beginning just above the burl walnut panel. One of my friends thought that the top is not original because its of a slightly different shade. I disagree with him, but I thought I'd mention it. While I am very knowledable about antique furniture from this era, I am by no means an expert, and although my friend could be right and me wrong, I think its original. The entire piece has obviously been refinsihed at some point in time (laquer and not polyurethane, thank God) and I believe who ever refinished it stained the top with a darker walnut stain to give a slight contract to the rest of the piece, which is a little lighter. Regardless, the top does fit nicely, and it does have an old patina to match the rest of the piece. Finally, t are no other tell tale signs to indicate that this is a marraige. However, if the top is not original to the piece, it still matches very nicely and whoever replaced it has apparently fooled me. The hinges to the doors are a little loose. The piece is in very nice conditon. The frame is still fairly solid, and since its not an exceptionally heavy piece and will be carefully wrapped, packaged, and boxed, it should survie the less than careful handling that is typical of both UPS and FedEx Ground.
