Antique Wedgwood Jasperware Ferner Ca. 1805-1850 ( based on the Wedgwood stamp detail)Made in England*************************This masterpiece of English Wedgwood Jasperware is a jasper dip and measures 6 inches across the top and 3 7/8th inches high, in a sage green color with white designs. The bas-relief Greco-Roman scenes are breathtaking! They are separated by columns and one of the columns is missing a piece at the top (please see second photo). Beside some slight wear (it is a planter and was used as one) the inside is in good used condition, with a few pits and raised bits under the glaze and a slight ring of mineral deposits around the top (see last picture). An interesting thing I found whilst searching the joys of jasperwar e....the clay used for jasperware was not from England, but rather it was imported from America. It was dug from river beds of Cherokee Indian country. It is unsure if it was all Cherokee earth, but some Cherokee clay was in all jaspers. It was from the backlands of Virginia, the Carolina's and Georgia. This size and color bowl is extremely hard to find! This is a smaller version of the typical ferner you will see, which is called a "large ferner". This is a "small ferner". The most common Wedgwood ferner's have a base, this one has 3 feet. The sage green color is so velvety smooth!MARKINGS: WEDGWOOD read more
