Hi and thank you for looking. I have owned and repaired dozens of antique electrostatic devices. I have literally restored over 30 wimshurst machines. Of all that I have owned, this is by far the most powerful. When I received it, it was in junk condition. It now works perfectly with an approximate 3 - 5" spark every two seconds. Please read my entire description. I make no apologies for purists (of which I would consider myself one, as I own many devices that have never been restored). This is still a valuable piece.
ALSO - Recognize that shipping this piece will be expensive, period. It weighs over 35 pounds (approx. 15 kilos), and it will require two large boxes. I will put in an ESTIMATE of over $120 to ship the device. Local pick up is strongly encouraged. I will calculate shipping costs after the sale has completed and I will provide tracking, if desired. I can't calculate shipping beforehand, as I do not want to package the device (I suspect there will be requests for additional photos, etc.). The machine is similar to those found in the Max Kohl catalogs of approximately 1905. It is a 24" disk model, though I think originally, it may have been better suited to 20". I've used 24" acrylic disks in the restoration. Glass is of course original, but it is less operable in humidity, and it is more difficult to ship, etc. I like using acrylic. The sectors are made from aluminum flashing and are robust. Let me describe everything as best I can. The upright supports are beautiful. The detail on the gold trim is very nice (pinstripe detail). The rotating bosses have been modified to accept the acrylic disks. One of the neutralizing bars is original. The other is only slightly so (one side of it now has modern brass). The wood frame is beautiful and has been restored. The ebonite upright that holds the dischargers is also nice. The brass balls on top of the ebonite uprights are new. So are the dischargers themselves. They are adjustable by unlocking the swivel using the wooden front pegs. I constructed the Leyden Jars using acrylic and a retrofitted wooden base (which I matched relatively close to the mahogany). The Leyden bases connect via one small wooden dowel to the base, allowing them to move slightly (and be removed for storage, etc.). Underneath the machine, the original swivel "switch" is present. It works fine, allowing the user to connect or disconnect the Leyden pairs for differing "power." The wheels are beautiful. I used leather for the drive belts. They work fine, though they do need to have the connecting thread repaired occasionally (the thread I use to splice the ends) after several weeks of use. This is fairly straightforward. Discharge balls themselves are solid brass spheres. They are only attached via pushing them onto the brass 3/8 discharge rod. This allows them to be disconnected easily. I do reserve the right to end the auction early. Please do not hesitate to ask me for additional photos or to request more information. Finally, I will not be able to ship or meet (if local pickup) until after May 15th. Good Luck. This is a nice piece. This is a very large machine. You don't often see them quite this big. It works perfectly. Please check my feedback. I've been with ebay OVER ELEVEN YEARS. I'm not a high volume buyer or seller, but I am honest. Hi. In response to a couple of e-mail questions. The collector "combs" (the brass units on either side of the disks that sit atop the ebonite supports and go on either side of the disks) are original. They have the original patina, the original adjusting screw and amazingly the original collecting leaf brass ends. I did put a new tiny brass sphere on the end of both of them to keep the charge leakage down. Both would have originally had such a piece for this purpose). Also, the handle is original and in very nice condition. Also, the brass extension "arms" that come out of the ebonite supports and have a ball that attaches to the Leyden jars is original with the origi...
