Antique Wire Wrapped Ascension Balloon Ornament/German
During the last half of the 1800s, hot air ballooning became popular in both Europe and the United States. At this same time, glassblowers began producing their versions of the balloon. The ornaments were usually wire wrapped and some has a scrap rider in the form of Santa, angels, children, etc. Balloons were popular pieces throughout the pre-war years . This balloon is a free-blown ball with the long blowing pike left attached. It probably had a scrap attached to the pike at one time, but it has been replaced with a chenille clay faced Santa. I do not believe that he is permanently attached, so he could be removed if you have an old scrap to replace him. The balloon is concave and is filled with old cotton. T is circle of old metal tinsel surrounding Santa and lots of curls of very fine wire come down from the top and wrap around the tinsel. It measures 6 ½" tall x 4 3.4" wide. This is probably the oldest glass ornament that I have ever had in my possession. -----As with all my auctions t are lots of pictures for judging coloring and condition - don't forget to supersize them for your best view. *********************************************************************** Payment Options: Money Orders or PayPal please.
