Antique WMF Jugendstil Silver Art Nouveau Chatelaine

You are viewing an exquisite early chatelaine clip. This little gem dates back to the 1890's. This vintage fashion accessory is designed to clasp on to a belt or pant waist and carry a chatelaine. Back in time, chains of useful instruments (in any combination and quantity) were affixed to the bottom hook such as a scissor, pocket knife, pen or pencil etui, pocket watch, house key, vinaigrette, wax seal, or other necessaire. This primitive tool tote was made by the renowned metalware giant "WMF" out of Germany, and the piece is marked accordingly. On the back you will find the company hallmark along with other markings in code. The markings are as follows: "N" which stands for nickel silver, "I/O" which stands for gilding or silver plating in this case, and "E" which I haven't the slightest clue of its meaning. The hallmark sits just to the right of the "N" and looks like a blur without the help of a high powered loupe - I used my 20x magnifier and found the classic ostrich mark standing above the letters WMF set within the confines of a cartouche. This decorative arts clothing accessory sports classic nouveau scrolls, and stylized organic foliage such as acanthus leaves. T is also a hint of Egyptian influence as can be seen on the square Grecian blocks layered just beneath the leaf near the top. The repousse motifs are done in magnificent relief allowing the light and shadow to play and display dynamic depth. The overall figure of this badge is sexy and elegant sporting an ovoid shaped face accentuated by a wafer thin profile. The complexion is polished and brilliant. Measurements: 3 ½"L 8.9cm), and 1 ½"W 3.8cm). CONDITION IS EXCELLENT: No dents, dings, breaks, or repairs. The patina is first rate. If everything in your life reflects elegance and good taste, and you care passionately about details, this jewel belongs to you.
