The "Ranger" Box Stove is a typical antique box stove. Some of the older box stoves have scissor legs, or only three legs. Box stoves are some of the earliest stoves made, and they do not require a grate, but the ashes on the bottom insulate the bottom plate of the stove and keep it from cracking due to heat. They are always used with wood. Box stoves are still manufactured today. However, the antique ones have a much higher quality of iron and tend to last much much longer than the modern ones which tend to use sheet metal, screws, pop rivets rather than solid cast iron. The "Ranger" manufactured by Southern Co-operative Foundry co. of Rome Ga. is one such box stove that will and has stood the test of time. Slightly more ornamented box stoves of the era are valued from aroung $750 to upwards of $2000 when fully restored. I have only located one such fully restored Ranger after having searched off and on for over 2 years. It is valued and currently for sale at $500 and I am doubtful it will fetch this amount. A modern such box stove sells new for around $450 with a sacrifice in quality of manufacture. I watched one that was not restored (which also had damage to the iron in the form of a huge crack) set online for sale for over a year at $200 and finally was sold for $100. It was extremely rusted out and I really didn't see why someone read more
