I am offering this incredible frame and engraving, which is by Thomas Hicks.(1866) In close-up, one can see Hick's name, and 1860, on spine of volume at bottom of engraving. Just under engraving, in tiniest lettering:" Entered according to act of Congress the the year 1866 by Thomas Hicks in the clerk's office of the district court of the United States for the Southern District of New York". In larger letters:It is titled "Authors of the United States". At bottom far right:" Engraved By A.H. Ritchie". Old, wavy glass is wonderful! This frame is 44" long x 29" high. It has depth of 2 1/2". This engraving is of the most famous American authors of the middle of the 19th century. It was drawn and published by Thomas Hicks, who was a native of Bucks County, Pa. and who studied at PA Academy and The National Academy of Design. Hicks set up a studio in NY City, as a portrait painter. Many prominent persons of the age came to sit for him. This print is actually a set piece showing off Hicks' portraits. , it shows authors of the US sitting and standing in this classical setting. Shown on the upper blacony are statues of the founders of modern vernacular literate: Goethe, Shakespeare, and Dante. A. H. Ritchie was one of the best historic print engravers of the 19th century, known for the richness of his engravings. I am not expert and do not read more
