is an antique printer's letter block typedrawer/tray. It has assorted sizes of compartments. The traymeasures 17 1/4" x 15" x 1 3/4". Not sure if it was made in the late 1800s or early 1900s. These trays were used by printers to store "cold type"--individual letters made of lead that were placed on a rod to create a line of type. The line of type was then rolled with ink and then pressed onto paper or card stock. Each compartment held a different letter of the alphabet.
Still has original label on front left (see photo). The label reads: "24 pt Grotesque Ext. 150 L/C". This means 24 points (type size), the name of the font (Grotesque Extended), and Lower Case (no capital letters). A wonderful feature is the curved copper handle with 3 screws. Other nice features include brass crossbars with center nails on the corners of the compartments and dovetail joints, a sign of a quality, handmade piece.
This tray is in very good condition considering its age. No major splits or cracks, just wear around the top and edge of the drawer which would result from opening and closing the drawer. Plenty of nicks and wear--the sign of a true American collectible! This tray will make a great addition to your collection.
