These pieces give a rare look into the heart of American Industrial Art masquerading as manufacturing. These came from a building that once housed the Collar City Laundry and Machine Company in Troy, New York. Troy was the industrial center of the United States in the 19 th century. As a machinist and toolmaker with 25 years experience, I am pretty sure these are molds that were used to make sand castings for cast iron gears. They are not dated, nor is t any patent notification on them (Picture 1).This is a straight cog wheel 16" in diameter and is 1" thick, fabricated with two pieces of wood. The teeth are 1 ¼" high and t is a 5/8" radius at the base of the teeth. The through hole is 3 1/4" round on one side but has an octagonal shape near the half-way point. The through hole from the opposite side is about 3 1/8" and has a distinct octagonal shape to it and a 1 ½" long keyway along the circumference. T is a 5 ¼" hub on one side and a 5 ½" hub on the other. Each side has clearance about ¼" deep from 11" diameter to the 5" hubs, complete with radii on the outside of the clearance and 45 degree chamfers up to the 5" hubs. (Picture 2) The next gear mold has a 30 degree taper along the teeth. It is 12 ½" across the bottom and 9 5/8" diameter on the top. The teeth are 1 3/8" high, 5 1/8" long and have flats across the tops of the teeth that are ¼" on the small end and ½" on the bottom. T is the typical 60 degree taper half way up on both sides of the teeth up to the flats. These teeth are made individually by hand, and include a radius at the bottom w the attach to the mold base. The base itself is made from a series of 5 disks which are various thicknesses from ¾" to 1 ¼", which are aligned and then nailed in place. T is a 2 5/8" turned plug for handling attached. The top is concave and has a clearance radius about 1/16" deep. The bottom is convex, has a large clearance radius, a 45 degree chamfer and a turned hub 4 ¼" diameter by 3/16" long. (Picture 3) The last of these molds is an astounding piece assembled from 6 primary structural pieces and 6 insets set at 60 degrees apart on the inside diameter of the mold. The outside diameter is 24" and the inside diameter is 14 1/4". The teeth are set at a 45 degree angle, are 1 1/8" high, 4 ½" long and have flats on the top that at 3/8" at the small end and 5/8" wide and the big end. Each was made by hand, include a radius at the bottom and then attached to the mold base. The backside of the mold form has a huge radius from the outside to the inside through hole, perfectly formed, and after the piece was assembled, a flat was milled precisely at 90 degrees of arc on opposing sides. The 6 insets I alluded to are inserted at a 45 degree angle to the inside diameter and are concentric with the inside and outside diameters and form a 14 3/8" diameter, probably for mounting on a fixture or a shaft. This is a stunning piece of craftsmanship made for industrial purposes and I have not seen its equal. (Picture 4 & 5). I have no idea what wood is used for this, but these gear molds are dried out and lighter than you would expect. T is some slight cracking because of this, but nothing that compromises the piece structurally. The patina on the wood is gorgeous and the workmanship of them is extraordinary! These are large pieces and shipping will be an adventure. I am estimating the weight of the three pieces at about 15 pounds before packaging. T are some dents on the teeth but hardly noticeable. The surface appears to be treated, but if it is paint or something else, it's hard to tell. Fantastic display pieces, and incredibly rare, particularly for their condition, which I would rate very good to excellent. It cost the company several hundreds of dollars to have these made. As always, I would be happy to answer any questions.
