Antique Primitive Wooden PressAsian / Chinese MOONCAKE MOLD Early 20th Century ** Low Reserve **
This is an old hand hewn wooden mold that has a beautiful patina and a well-worn appearance. You can even see that the area w the thumb would hold is the most rubbed and worn. This paddle-shaped mold was purchased at an estate sale. It was labeled as a butter mold from the 1920s/30s. But with some research, Iâe(tm)ve discovered that it is actually a âeoemooncakeâe mold. Mooncakes are a traditional Asian pastry that is made during the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. The molds were typically ornately decorated with the bakerâe(tm)s insignia. The dough was pressed in the mold, flipped to remove the dough for baking, and the design would be prominently displayed prominently on the top of this special treat. This mold has a wonderful carved design. T appears to be a double-Pangan tree image and a double-âeoebulbâe image with leaves (maybe an onion?). The diameter of the circular design is 3 1 /8 inch. Overall dimensions: 8 3 /8 âe x 4 âe x 7 /8 âe Excellent antique condition. No cracks in wood. Has some remnants of dough in the carving. Also some âeoe antique dough âe stuck to the back of the mold J . Has the usual scratches and nicks one might except of a kitchen tool of this age. T has been a hook added to the back of this mold. Itâe(tm)s nice for displaying, but the indentation in the wood for imbedding the hookâe(tm)s base does not have the same masterful craftsmanship of the original.
