Map Maker: Christopher Weigel (Weigelio) Origin/ Date: Nuremberg / Marked 1730Coloring: Hand Colored Size: 14 x 11 inches (Visible when matted, not including Margins) Frame Size: 17 3/4" x 14 3/4" Description:Decorative double hemisphere map of the World, based upon the first edition of JB Homann's larger scale map. California is shown as an island. Two smaller polar hemispheres are shown, showing the extent of knowledge (and fictional details) of the two poles. By configuring the continents in the manner shown here, Europe and North America are shown near the center of the map. This map, drawn by a Western cartographer, depicts the earth's hemispheres in the opposite manner from that drawn by Eastern cartographers.Surrounding the hemispheres are windheads, cherubs and other decorative embellishments. The decorative elements of this map depict opposite elements of nature: the moon and the sun, seen at the top; a volcano and rainbow at the bottom. Celestial figures at the top (north) blow cold wind toward the Northern Hemisphere, while waterspouts swirl in southern waters below. A striking map, which is much scarcer than the larger Homann map. Up for auction is this amazing genuine antique framed map. This is an original and not a reproduction. Impression marks in the paper can clearly be seen in my pictures left by the etching plate. Paper quality is excellent which is why it has survived for almost 300 years! This map has "old color" which greatly enhances its appearance. Please study pictures carefully. I have taken pictures in natural and artificial light so the colors vary from picture to picture.I am parting with several antique maps in my collection because I really need the money right now. Please feel free to contact me with any questions! I am describing this item to the best of my ability, but am not an expert. This map is rare and has sold between $1000 -$2500 in recent auctions. I am starting the bidding at just $300!Condition: This map is in Good condition overall. Lines and letters remain crisp; and original color is beautiful. The white of the paper is still bright especially considering its age! There are no tears, rips, or holes that I can find. The map retains margins as can be seen in picture no. 11. This map was flattened and glued to a mat board or paperboard backing a very long time ago. It appears to be very stable but I have no way to verify how "archival" this paperboard backing is. F raming job was done at least 50 years ago. Under old paper backing I found what can be seen in picture no. 12. The framing mat can be seen as the larger white paper in this picture . The smaller paperboard is what the map is attached to. If the map was not glued to paperboard I would be selling this map as "very good- excellent condition" as this is the way the map grades visually (I would also be starting the bidding at $1000). As I mentioned there are no damages and the margins are intact- not cut. Everyone who sees this map is amazed at what good condition it is in! This map should be re-framed with new acid-free mat. Please study pictures carefully as the pictures are an important part of my condition description! Will be shipped in the frame as in picture 1 and packed very well and insured!
