Antique yellowback book. Sketches of London Life and Character, Edited by Albert Smith, published by Dean and Son, London, 1850s ?. Essays on different aspects of London life, particularly entertainment, by Smith, Horace Mayhew, Robert Brough, Shirley Brooks, Charles Kenney, James Hannay, Angus Reach, J. Stirling Coin, John Oxenford and T. Miller. 23 full page illustrations by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni - the book was originally published in 1849 as "Gavarni in London". 188 pages. Spine paper missing, area of loss to illustrated board cover. A few creases and slight marks to interior pages. Beautiful illustrations of early Victorian society and popular culture.
