Yomut Turkmen "Chuval", Central Asia, circa 1900 - 20 , 3' 6" x 2' 6" - FREE SHIPPING"Chuval" refers to a type of large storage bag made by the tribal peoples of Central Asia, a bag that would have had a flat woven back (no longer present in this example) and used to keep personal possessions. They are thought to have been made for 'dowry' upon the occasion of a marriage of young woman. Made in pairs, they often reflect the best efforts of the bride's family to impress the new husband's family. The designs are traditional, reflecting patterns meaningful to the tribe, clan or families. Steeped in tradition, they are perhaps the most plentiful of Turkmen weavings in the marketplace. The borders of this example are quite nice, and rather unusual as is the "elem" or area at the bottom, below the border system. The condition is good, with no repair or re-weaves, and the handle of this weaving is 'fresh' suggesting it was seldom used in the past as often these dowry pieces remain in boxes and preserved for posterity rather than just used in the course of everyday, normal life. The colors are all derived from natural dyesAll weavings and textiles offered here are guaranteed to be 100% authentic and may be returned upon arrival if there is dissatisifaction for any reason, including shipping/handling fees.
