AntiqueYoung & SonsLand Surveyorâe(tm)s Mount for a Transit Instrument(Philadelphia 1889)This auction is for an antique land surveying instrument manufactured by the Young & Sons Company of Philadelphia Pa. This is a very early instrument by this famous company. The companyâe(tm)s name is very nicely engraved on the top of the base in script type writing. Just beneath the company name is the number 5822, which through our research leads us to believe that this was manufactured in 1889. This is very nice authentic surveyorâe(tm)s instrument. It is made of solid brass and copper. It has been nicely cleaned and polished to bring it back to its original look. If you look closely at the pictures you will notice one top end section that has not been cleaned or polished. This was intentional, It is a way of showing the contrast of its age. We will leave it up to the new owner if they would like it to be cleaned and polished or if they prefer to keep the contrast in tact. The instrument has 4 leveling posts that are very clean and rotate freely. The original "site level" that belong to this piece is long gone and not included in the auction. This is a very heavy piece as it weights approximately 8 pounds. We can not find any evidence of deep scratches or dents in any of the brass or copper. This is truly a very rare piece of survey instrument
