Dimensions: Height: 210 millimetres Width: 260 millimetres ( 8.5" x 11" Inches) Inscription Content: Lettered below the image with the title and '[monogram] AH delin.'; etched in the image 'J. June sculp'; numbered in upper right '4' Description: A Chinese man wearing a fur cloak, holding a pole and standing on a small platform drawn by a bull across a rice paddy, to right, with a small boat on the lake behind them, houses in a fenced yard and mountains in the background; plate 4 in a series illustrating Chinese rice cultivation. Biography: Augustin Heckel (1690 – 1770)[1] was a painter, watch case engraver and draughtsman. He was born in Augsburg, Germany, in a family of goldsmiths. As a young man, he came to London and made his career in England. He died on 20 August 1770 in Richmond, Surrey[2] (now in London), where he had retired in 1746.[3] He had a second skill as a flower painter in watercolours and gouache, and published two books of flower etchings of his own designs, The Lady's drawing book in 1755, and The Florist in 1759. An album of his drawings is held at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.[2] His A West View of Richmond etc. in Surrey from the Star and Garter on the Hill, published read more
