ANTONIO PINEDA made this simple, handsome ring, using 970 silver (a higher grade silver than 925 sterling) and baguettes of obsidian. The five baguettes range from 3/8" to 5/16" long, are 1/8" wide, and the tops are rounded, rather than faceted, for a more subtle look. The center piece has a more matte finish than the others. T's a Pineda piece with rounded obsidian oblong inserts in William Spratling and the Mexican Silver Renaissance: Maestros de Plata, the catalog that accompanied an exhibition of silver made by Spratling and his contemporaries. Pineda was one of Spratling's apprentices before moving on to found his own studio. According to Bille Hougart's The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks, Pineda began using the crown mark in 1953, and all the marks on this ring appear in the Hougart book. One of the baguettes is slightly as is -- a corner is chipped, and I've included a close-up of it. The flaw is about 1/16" across and does not detract from the overall appearance of the ring by any means. If you push the center baguette, it will shift just a fraction from side to side, but is in no danger of doing any more than that! The silver band is, of course, thick and the ring weighs a respectable 6.9 pennyweight on my digital scale. It has the usual assortment of light surface scratches and faint dings you'd expect on vintage silver. The ring is a size 9 1/4, and the band is just shy of 1/2" wide at the top, tapering to 1/8" at the back. This design will complement vintage Mexican, modernist, and art deco jewelry -- it's timeless, it's great, and (best of all) it's by Antonio Pineda, one of the Taxco masters.
