Offered for auction is an extraordinary Meiji handwork "dragon & phoenix" antique cloisonne vase; along with a fine carved wooden display stand. (The display stand was not found with the vase.) The imagery is mythical and the handcrafting is masterful. The piece has no obvious Maker's mark or export designation. Based upon visual clues the country of origin is certainly Japan. The enamel color pallet is striking. Adding to the vivid colors is a goldstone fleck, which is subtly picked up by the light in the black enamel and the green [colored cartouche] defining the dragon. The vase stands approximately 9 1/2" tall. The balance is even and the weight is approximately 12 1/2 oz. The base metal appears to be copper. Great care has been taken by previous owners of this vase, as the condition is good for the age. The only real wear I can detect is minor scratching and minimal pitting.
