RARE Early Pennsylvania TRAPUNTO Stuffed Work
Dressing Table Cover In the early 19th century, trapunto or stuffed work was a technique that a skilled needleworker used to create a white on white design for a bridal quilt - a major part of the bride's trousseau. In addition, the bride-to-be would sometimes make another trapunto piece in a matching or similar motif to be used as a cover for her dressing table. Few of these covers have survived in good condition, and most are in museums. This one dates probably from the first third of the 19th century and is full of tiny, intricate hand stitching, about 14 to the linear inch. Purchased in southeastern Pennsylvania. This cover measures about 45 inches wide by 28 inches deep at the center, exclusive of the trim, which extends to about 3 inches from the cover. The classic motifs include a large basket of fruit centered, flanked by two cornucopias and surrounded on the sides and front by stylized roses and leaves. Recognizable fruits include a large melon, grapes, pears and pineapple. A knitted cotton lace trim is applied around the front and sides. While this rare piece has survived in generally excellent condition, there are a few minor flaws that must be mentioned. There is some damage to the trim, the worst along the right side as seen in the first picture, and other smaller ones. Also on the right edge is a dark spot, along with some dark flecks over the top area of the piece. These might be removed or at least minimized with a careful, professional cleaning or restoration.
