APOLLO 15 LUNAR SAMPLE MEMENTO (REPLICA) Mementos are occasionally given to Kennedy Space Center workers in recognition for their contributions to a variety of programs. This disk replicates such a memento. Two main types of rocks, basalts and breccias, were found at the Apollo 15 landing site. The terrestrial sample in this disk is physically and chemically nearly identical to the actual samples brought back from the moon by the Apollo 15 astronauts. The disk contains a lunar regolith simulant composed mainly of basalt with olivine and pyroxine, particles no larger than 50 microns. Regolith is the loose, fragmental material on the Moon's surface, a product of meteoritic bombardment as the debris thrown out of the impact craters. The material in this disk is the closest thing to lunar regolith available on this planet. PLUS EXTRAS The lot comes with a nice brass display stand, a protective cloth, a 21 page NASA teacherâe(tm)s guide to the Moon, a 10 page paper on lunar soil, a Moon lithograph, and several other items. As a retired teacher I have decided to sell some items that have been in my collection for many years. The disk was used in my class for students to study rock and mineral types. It is in excellent shape for being held and dropped several times, with nearly no marks or disfigurations except a very small crack around
