You are bidding on a two antiquarian volumes, first editions printed in 1797 and 1799. The first volume, printed in 1797, is titled "An Apology for the Believers in the Shakspeare - Papers Which Were Exhibited in Norfolk Street." The second volume, printed in 1799, is titled "A Supplemental Apology for the Believers in the Shakspeare - Papers Being a Reply to Mr. Malone's Answer..."Note that the spelling of Shakspeare in the book title is different than the spelling in the auction title (I didn't think any collector would be likely to use Shakspeare for a search).The subject of the books is a set of Shakespeare manuscripts discovered in the 1790s that were at first deemed to be authentic and then subsequently deemed to be forgeries. For more details on the subject of the books, I suggest looking up "Ireland Shakespeare Forgeries" in wikipedia. The author is George Chalmers, an individual who was involved in numerous literary controversies of that era.Both books have a slight amount of damage to the covers and spine, the top and bottom hinges of both books are worn and chipped and the corners are bumped. The interior bindings of both books are intact; There is a small amount of cracking on the inside covers of the bindings.
