Nowadays there are masterpieces of masterpieces- called "Collectors' Replicas". They are reproductions of an original. Thus the problem of the exorbitant cost involved in acquiring masterpieces is eliminated.

The Apostile Stein is an authorized replica of an historic Apostle Stein from CreuBen, today a special treasure in the art-collection belonging to Professor Spiegel of Dusseldorf and bearing the shelf-number 741 117.

The historic Apostle Stein originated in 1687 in a potter's workshop in CreuBen in Upper Franconia which became known especially for the colorful enamelling on its steins, decorated with vivid super-imposed embossment.

From the end of the 15th century on, CreuBen developed into a centre of the pottery craft expecially in the manufacture of stoneware, which reached its peak in the 17th century. The stoneware creations of CreuBen were distinquished by the characteristic deep-brown salt-glzae which was attained by firing the kilns with pine-wood.

They manufactured then not only great quantities of drinking-cups , tankards and bottles, but also beer steins, which were known for th attractive ccoloring of their relief decoration in gay enamel.

These valuable steins were exported as art creations in much demand toall the civilized countries in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries.

At that time the tankards known as Apostle Steins drew especial attention because of the 12 Apostles so vividly and colorfully depicted around the perimter. Usually the Agnus Dei or the Christum Signum was pictured on the front.

The Apostle Stien in question, however, is on of those rare specimens with a light relief reproduction of an angel on the handle.

Together with the number of this certificate the GERZ signature proves that this GERZ Apostle Stein is a perfect replica of an historic original in a proportional size of 1 to 1.
