Utamaro (1750 - 1806) Japanese Woodblock reprint A Rare Opportunity- Check out these offerings. This unique combination of high quality, old reprints and fantastic provenance will not be repeated. Collect old prints with the Muller provenance and delve into the exotic world of old Japan. How were these prints done? These beautiful woodblock reprints were done exactly as the originals. An artist carved a wood block, one for each color, and hand printed each print one color at a time. These old reprints are sought after for their meticulous attention to detail and color, rivaling the originals. Unlike the brighter, souvenir prints seen on the market these fine reprints show the attention to detail and careful color choices intended to exactly replicate the old originals. Detail of this Print Woman Applying Makeup Using a Full Length Mirror Comments- A lovely Utamaro design and an artist's masterwork. A young beauty seen applying makeup in a large mirror, her face seen only in the reflection of the mirror, the woman with her back to the subject. Beautiful, shimmering silvered mica detail in the reflective mirror area - very nicely done and a sign of a high quality reprint. An excellent piece for display. This beautiful woodblock was published by the Watanabe Company and bears the important, Watanabe 6mm seal. These old Watanabe prints are some of the finest woodblock reprints ever done. The Watanabe publisher and Muller collection background, of this print, offer a collector a opportunity to own a very special woodblock image of this Utamaro masterwork. Artist & Signature- Utamaro (1750 - 1806)Size- 9 3/4" x 14 3/4" Provenance and our guarantee- Robert O. Muller collection, collected by Muller in Japan in the 1930's. Each print sold with certificate of authenticity from Fuji Arts (noting Muller collection provenance). Condition- Excellent color and detail. This print is not backed. One slight wrinkle in lower left corner as shown. A couple light spots in subject as shown. Otherwise, in very good condition. Muller was known as a first rate conservator and took exquisite care when storing his prints. These woodblocks are clearly old prints showing the markers of paper that is 70 years old with the wonderful sense of an old print.
