PRESIDENT LINCOLN SHOT! SEWARD ASSASSINATED!

A despatch to Mr. Steere states that President Lincoln was shot last night and mortally wounded, at half past 2 in Wash ton, his case was considered hopeless. Secretary Seward was also assassinated in his house, and though still alive is entirely unconscious.

April 15, 1865

P.S. a later despatch says-President Lincoln is dead.

Who is Mr. Steere? The Steere family was/is a prominent family from Amesbury Massachusetts. Searching the web I found 2 Steere's who are strong possibilities. One lived in the immediate Amesbury vicinity and was referenced with Marquis de La Fayette in front of his name [(Marquis de La Fayette) Mr. Steere]. The second possibility is Steere, the prominent Civil War Industrialist, of Providence R.I.. It is possible they are one in the same, but I couldn't determine that in my search.

Amsbury? This piece was found among numerous articles from/concerning Amesbury, Salem and Salisbury Ma.. It also included prominent families family tree info. I believe this piece was rushed to the street by the local newspaper anticipating a mored detailed pending story.

Condition Overall The paper has a high rag content so it has survived well. T is some light foxing, some creasing and 1" tears in the fold at both the top and the bottom.
