Up for auction is an original U.S. soldier letter from the Mexican American War era.The soldier started writing his letter on April 15th, 1846 from a Camp near Matamoras,Mexico. He finished this letter on April 17th, 1846. The letter was written by Captain WilliamChapman a member of the 5th Infantry. General Zachary Taylor had movedthe 5th Infantry into position for conflict to a Camp near Matamoras. This letter was written just a few weeks before the 5th Infantry in combination with the 7th and 8th Infantry engaged Mexican troops at Palo Alto on May 8th, 1846. Captain Chapman was engaged in all of the early battles of the war on the Northern Front. He served with the 5th Infantry for the entire duration of the war and was brevetted twice for heroism.Below is a transcription of almost the entire letter. Only small sections of the letterare not included. I left a blank space if I am not sure of a word.The letter reads: Camp before Matamoras April 15, 1846My Dearest Annie,Since I wrote you at the end of March we have had all sorts of doings and have been as busy as bees. Surveying grounds, moving camps, throwing up entrenchments and making all the necessary arrangements to defend ourselves against any attack which the Mexicans might make.
