SPACE Bowl and Egg Cup - Designed by Richard Meier in 2000 - Manufactured in Finland by Arabia As part of a unique collection of home products - the famous American architect Richard Meier designed a range of dinnerware called Space. Other designers created complementary lines of the collection (Air, Earth, Water and Fire). Since the collection was produced for only two years, these items are very rare. Meier designed the Getty Center in Los Angeles in 1997. Richard Meier was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1934. Richard Meier graduated from Cornell University in 1957 then worked with a series of architects, including Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill and Marcel Breuer. Richard Meier established his own practice in 1963. His practice has included housing and private residences, museums, high-tech and medical facilities, commercial buildings and such major civic commissions as courthouses and city halls in the United States and Europe: Among his most well-known projects are the High Museum in Atlanta; the Frankfurt Museum for Decorative Arts In Germany; Canal+ Television Headquarters in Paris; the Hartford Seminary In Connecticut; the Atheneun in New Harmony, Indiana, and the Bronx Developmental Center in New York. All of these have received National Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Among his best-known projects is the Getty Center in Los Angeles . Q Has business picked up? A Today we’re busy, but I always worry about two weeks from now when we finish what we’re doing and have to figure out what’s next. Fortunately, the things that were on hold are now moving ahead, so we’re pleased about that. And we’ve been in touch with a couple of developers here in New York who sound optimistic, but they don’t have any projects at the moment. So, it’s not great, but it’s not that bad. Q Are you disappointed by the slow sales at On Prospect Park, the glass tower you designed in Brooklyn ? A For awhile it was static, but I understand now that things are improving. I felt badly for the people who were living there, but they didn’t seem to mind. Q What is the status of the Teachers Village in Newark, “work force” housing you designed? A It’s gotten all of the approvals from the city. It’ll break ground probably a little over a year from now. The housing is very much a part of what’s happening in downtown Newark. There are also two charter schools that are a part of the project, but another firm is doing that. Q Some call the project in Newark, also your birthplace, a return to your more modest roots. A I did low-income housing in the Bronx — Twin Parks — in the late ’60s. In fact, we went up there and visited just a few weeks ago. It was pretty depressing to see what’s happened in 40 years. It’s really been neglected. Q Any opinions on the rebuilding of the World Trade Center, and the design by your former student, Daniel Libeskind , who competed against your team for master plan architect? A I do. ... read more
