This incredible jade artifact is about 5,000 years old. It was carved by an artisan of the Hongshan Culture. These people lived in the region that is today Inner Mongolia and the Liaoning Provence of China about 4,500 - 2,200 BC, when this region was a temperate rain forest. No other culture has left a more thorough record of their culture in jade. Their history is literally written in jade. It staggers the mind to study Hongshan jades and realize that these stone age people were so adept at carving skills and so highly imaginative in their art carvings. This fantastic jade carving is a very special piece from my private collection. Artifacts like this are nearly impossible to find now. This double bird carving is shaped like a cong. It has a wondefully lustreous feel and perfect harmony. It has natural moderate to heavy erosion as evidence of its long burial, but it was carefully polished to reveal the lustre of the jade without disturbing its bearing. T are no mechanical marks or tooling marks like so many carelessly repolished pieces wear today. This is a heavy and solid jade artifact that measures about 5 x 3-5/8 x 2-3/4 inches.
