Michael ("Who is as God?"), the greatest of the archangels, whether in Jewish, Christian or Mohammedan writings, occurs frequently both in painting and statuary in Alto Peru.In Spanish America, it was customary for every town to select a guardian saint. Besides Our Lady, patroness of all the Americas, Michael was perhaps the most popular figure.Our St Michael is imposing, with a beautiful gown. His powerful wings add to his martial appearance. His regal, exquisite brocade clothing is embellished with bronze leaf. This addition of stenciled or painted gold leaf onto oil paintings is called, as it was in early contracts, brocateado. It is also sometimes termed sobredorado (overgilding) and has also been described as escarchado.
