This huge oil painting on canvas depicts the Archangel Raphael, one of the seven archangels who stand before the Lord. The Archangel Raphael's name in Hebrew means "God has healed". He holds a fish whose organs were used for medicinal purposes and is thus a symbol of healing. Raphael's clothing is richly embroidered to show his high status as an archangel. The archangel Raphael is set over the spirits of men, and is commanded to heal the earth, which the fallen angels have defiled.
