Touching archive of material from the family of Lt. Frank D. Nowack, Company K, 9th Infantry Regiment, Second Division. Wartime lantern, AEF HQ identification booklet, pass for British lines, photos, many papers. The material was kept by Lt. Nowack's brother and then passed to that brother's son.
The 9th Infantry was one of the leading units of the 2nd Division in the Sept. 12, 1918, attack at St. Mihiel and the 3rd Battalion, under Maj. Denig, was the lead battalion of the regiment in the attack. Lt. Nowack was killed in action by artillery fire while leading his platoon according to the Adjutant Generalâe(tm)s office in a statement in the archive. Lt. Nowack was an insurance agent from Des Moines, Iowa, before the war and was initially assigned to the War Risk Bureau in France dealing with insurance for soldiers and thus was posted to the AEF Headquarters. He moved into a line position and was assigned to the 2nd Division 8/23/18. Included are Lt. Nowackâe(tm)s field lantern sent home with his effects tagged with a note to his nephew and a note it about loose in the archive, Lt. Nowackâe(tm)s AEF Headquarters identification card (from his time serving with the war risk section), which would be scarce since it was to be turned in when leaving for another assignment, a pass dated December, 1917, allowing him to pass within British lines, and a victory medal with St. Mihiel and Defensive Sector clasps inscribed with his name and unit, and the back of the pin bar inscribed KILLED IN ACTION SEPTEMBER 12, 1918, several photos of him in uniform, officerâe(tm)s commission, numerous family papers, correspondence, and newspaper clippings regarding his college career, enlistment, commission, death in battle, and subsequent return of his body, letters of condolence from friends, etc. Also present is the original telegram informing his brother of Lt.
