2nd Lt. Samuel Smith, Field Artillery of the First Infantry Division. His M1902 sword and a miniature of an M1902 having 30` etched blade with metal scabbard. Pair of leather leggings, olive drab green wool leg wraps, leather field artillery officer`s map case, web belt with cartridge pouch, overseas hat, two sets of military spurs, trousers and coat. The coat has overseas chevrons and the unit patch of the First Infantry Division (i.e. Big Red One) and French Fourgiere. The books with this lot include: Smith`s Field Artillery School instructions; a handbook of the Germany Army, with information on everything from identification of various uniforms to ranges for guns; a book of photographs of the July 14th victory celebration in Paris; 1st Division: Summary of Operations..., actually published during the WWII; a history of the 1st Division published by the Society of the First Division; Smith`s pocketbook of Bible verses, in which he noted, This bible was given to me by a minister, on the wharf at Southampton, England. I carried it in my kit bag all thru the European war A.E.F. Also included are pre-war materials such as the Memorial Address given for Representative Sylvester Clark Smith (father? uncle?) in 1914, a high school and two Case School of Applied Science yearbooks, and binders of copies of important papers such as membership in professional associations, school records and more. With his pocket `bible/tract` is a 3 x 3.5` folding wallet with Sylv. Smith, Clev., O. stamped in two places on inside. From the included documents, Mr. Smith`s post-war career was as an architect. Along with this lot comes an archive of a discharge and legion certificates. The 1st Infantry Division deployed to France as the core of the AEF and subsequently earned battle honors for Meuse Argonne and Saint-Mihiel while suffering over 23,000 casualties in less than a year. Divisional artillery included the 1st Field Artillery Brigade composed of the 5th, 6th and 7th FA Regiments.
