Arctic Whaling Scene Painting, of the 19th , it is not signed but considering the details ,the artist was obviously present , The unusual length of the FLAGÃ,´s field of stripes (13) indicates that this great standard was a U.S. naval flag , the detailed vessels demonstrates knowledge of whaling vessels and his ability to depict them in highly detailed and accurate broadside views , the Wellington Top Hat (used 1860-1880), clothing ,and lot of details clearly indicate the end of the 19th , probably very close to 1870, this is also fully consistent with the conditions of the canvas and the backside and the condition of the beautiful and heavy quality frame. The painting , JUST THE CANVAS , measures 30 inches wide and 25 inches tall, the excellent frame adds about 4 Ã,Â" each side, for a total of about 38" wide and 33" tall. There was just one man able to paint this Arctic scape , and is most probably William Bradford 1823-1892 , BradfordÃ,Â's paintings feature small but carefully delineated ships, giant icebergs, in blue and white landscapes. Often, tiny figures underscore man's insignificance compared to nature's grandeur. Occasionally, polar bears add a touch of menace to scenes, every characteristic of Bradford is in this work , no one has captured the magnificent spectacle of the northern lands as well as Bradford , ITr is NOT signed , but this is not a copy , is a period painting (check backside) ,I think we can fairly attribute this piece at least to the school of this 19th American Master painter. Better quality pictures available under request.
