This specimen is from the Chinle formation in northeastern Arizona, an area famous for its varied and brilliantly colored petrified wood. It dates back to the Triassic era and is of the extinct species of tree, araucarioxylon Arizonicum. The different colors are due to the different minerals present during the petrification process. It was photographed both wet and dry in natural light. Photos 1 & 2 are a side by side comparison of the wet/dry photos. It weighs about 2 lb. 8 oz. and measures about 6.5 x 3.25 x 2". Add this fossil wood to your classroom or childcare facility or enjoy it in your collection or garden. I am happy to combine items to save you money on shipping, should you win more than one auction.
