This is an important Armenian Orphan Rug.
Armenian Orphan Rugs RARELY come on the market. A handful exist. These rugs were woven by the orphan children of the victims of the Armenian Genocide. These children somehow survived, although many died in the very orphanages that were set up to provide for them. If you are reading this, you are certainly already well aware of the horrors of the first genocide of the twentieth century. The rug has been published (it is featured prominently in Jim Keshishian's book, Inscribed Armenian Rugs of Yesteryear, on pages 110 and 111). It has also been museum exhibited, most recently in the year 2000 at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, at which time is was also featured in the catalog that accompanied the exhibit. This is a wool, "sampler" rug, measuring 1'2" by 3'4", with a label on the back stating that this rug was "made by Armenian girls in Ghazir (Syria) Orphanage of Near East Relief." In the book, Keshishian describes how he was "seized with excitement and offered a princely sum for this sample rug" when he first saw it. He also notes that a similar rug was given to President Calvin Coolidge in 1926 by these girls, which was given to the White House by the President's son in 1983. This is a rug that I wanted desperately since I first read about it. I offered Keshishian, a friend, much more than "a princely sum", and he repeatedly turned me down. As his life drew to a close, however, I received a phone call offering me the rug. It is with reluctance that I offer it for sale. The rug is in superb condition. You may see some bright spots on the photographs from the flash. I had it professionally framed shortly after I received it, and it is framed in such a manner that the label can be viewed through a covered opening on the back. The starting price is absolutely firm. The item will be professionally packaged, insured, and shipped anywhere in the United States--all at my cost. I have been an ebay member since 1998. Please check out my feedback. And I accept Paypal.
