US Army Forage Cap, Regulation, Artillery (89-A) An extremely fine US Army contract forage cap (or kepi) made of dark blue wool indigo cloth, with a tarred board crown of about 5 inches diameter, rising in front 2 ¾ inches, rear seam to crown 6 inches, with a bound visor of black enameled leather, with two gilt ‘eagle’ side buttons holding the black enameled leather adjustable chin strap. Interior lining of black satin, gathered, with draw-string, with a 1 ½ inch russet leather sweat band stamped in silver print with US Gov’t contract, “J.A.JOEL/CONTRACT OF APRIL 5th,1892/NEW YORK.” Small red paper label indicated size, “6 7/8”. Two small pin head sized moth nips, minor. Adopted January 5, 1889. Differed from the previous 1872 forage cap in a change of the lining from gathered brown polished cotton to black satin and visor from unbound to bound around the edge. Has a very scarce insignia authorized 8 Feb., 1877, for the Second U.S. Artillery, Battery A, a brass pin-on, lead backed, 1872 pattern. The forage cap also stamped with “U.S./Q.M.D.” Regulation forage caps were all a part of the uniform for regular U.S. Army troops and are extremely scarce.
