You are bidding on a faithful RECREATION of the medal issued to members of the Society of the Army of the Tennessee In April, 1865, the Society of the Army of the Tennessee was formed at Raleigh , North Carolina , membership being restricted to officers who had served with the old Army of the Tennessee . The object was declared to be "to keep alive that kindly and cordial feeling which has been one of the characteristics of this army during its career in the service." General Sherman was elected president in 1869, and continued to hold the office for many years. When first organized in October 1862, the Union Army of the Tennessee contained but one corps, the XIII, which held 11 divisions and a cavalry command. This organization was too cumbersome, and the army was reorganized in December into four corps- the XIII, XV, XVI, and XVII- each containing two or three divisions and detachments of artillery and cavalry. The army's first commander was Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, who led it in the long campaigns to capture Vicksburg , Miss. Subsequent commanders included Generals George H. Thomas, William T.
