This is a very early Army Security Agency (ASA) regimental stein. It is from the late 1940's or early 1950's when the ASA was still "masquerading" as the Signal Corps. This stein is from the 9473rd TSU Signal Service Team. These teams were small units of ASA personel, stationed along the East German and Czech borders, who manned listening posts. T purpose was to intercept Soviet, East German and Czech military communications (electronic surveilance). These small units often lived in German hotels and occasionally even wore civilian clothing. Intelligence they gatd was sent to the NSA in Virginia. I at one time tracked down the exact small town the 9473rd was stationed in, but have miss-placed the information. As for the stein: The front features a US Army, Europe patch and Signal Corps insignia. One side of the stein lists the names of those in the unit. The other has a picture the Schneeberggipfel on Mt. Schneeberg in northern Bavaria (see information provided by ebay member posted below). The stein is in very good condition, with no damage. The lid is tight and the colors bright. It is, however, heavily crazed and has a tiny bit of missing paint. It is marked "Hand-made, Bayreuth" on the bottom and "1L" at the handle. High bidder to pay $12 S&H.
