US troops in Vietnam quickly found the 1950s universal ammo pouches too large for the "sweet sixteen". Smaller M-56 "shorty" pouches were developed to carry ammo more snugly and quietly. These were soon replaced by nylon versions, making any M-56 shorty ammo pouches quite rare today. This set of US Army Vietnam M-56 "SHORTY" AMMO POUCHES are in very good condition, with heavy patina to the metal front closure of the right pouch, some patina to the metal front closure of the left pouch, some scattered surface chipping and patina to the metal ALICE clips at the back of each pouch, some scattered whitish and brownish soiling at the front of each pouch, some fading to the "US" marking at the lower front right pouch, and with some scattered age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the pouches are in fine shape, with absolutely no rips, holes, tears, or other damage to the tough OD canvas construction. Most interestingly, they are lightly "US" marked at front, sport all of the original flaps, straps, and buckles, and are dated 1968 in the crisp nomenclature stampings at each interior front flap. A fine example of very rare, original US Army Vietnam M-56 "SHORTY" AMMO POUCHES.
