My name is Arno Bernard Jr and I'm a South African knifemaker. I started manufacturing knives in October 2005 and I have a workshop in a beautiful Eastern Free State town, called Bethlehem, in South Africa. I believe that my interest in knives started gradually seeing that my father (Arno Bernard) is also a knifemaker. Thanks to his guidance and lecturing, I could master the knifemaking skills quite easily. I prefer plain designs that is both practical, but also beautiful and I enjoy seeing my knives being used! Quality of a knife lies for me in the type of steel, the type of grind, the handle material and then finally the finishing of the knife. I make use of 12C27 stainless steel from Sweden and the reason I prefer this steel is that it keeps it's edge very well and provides a blade that looks stylish and striking after it's polished. My grind is a freehand hollow grind that is unique and I usually use natural African handle materials like giraffe bones and warthog tusks. About the finishing of my knives - All the handles, before polishing, are shaped with a file to ensure a comfortable fit in your hand. Each knife is then hand polished to add that extra crisp look to the knife. I heat treat and temper my own blades and all my knives go through a liquid nitrogen treatment process. I believe that the use of this knife will bring you as much joy, as it brought to me during the manufacturing of it! The tang is tapered. All my knives are very light and well balanced.
