Antique Art Deco Sculpture by Jean-Marie Camus 1877-1955. The title of this monumental sculpture is Bacchante and Panther. The terra cotta example is pictured on page 59 of Bryan Catleys Book Art Deco and other Figures. Camus won numerous prizes and gold medals for sculpture presented at various salon exhibitions . The present example we are offering is this ingenious artists most important and best work. The symbolism of the beautiful nude Bacchante dancing, singing, playing the cymbals and calming the fierce panther beneath her that she has adorned with grape vines is a creation beyond the scope of most artists imagination or dreams of that era. This is certainly the most beautiful Art Deco sculpture I have seen in my 40 plus years dealing, collecting appraising and specializing in antique bronze sculpture. I have searched 40 years of auction records and cannot find another example of this superb sculpture. I know of no other example of this bronze in any museums or private collections anywhere. I believe this was an exhibition sculpture and is unique in bronze. This is the most important Art Deco sculpture I have ever owned or seen. It is indeed a pleasure to be able to offer this unique treasure to its new owner who I know will treasure it as the high light of his or her collection. This majestic masterpiece measures 35 1/2 inches tall, has a length of 21 1/2 inches and a width at the base of 11 1/2 inches. There is an expression art feeds the soul. Words cannot describe the awesome presence of this sculpture. I have always felt we do not own our art , we are custodians of it for the generations to follow. It is now my time to pass on some of my treasures to the next generation of collectors. I hope a museum curator sees this item and purchases it for his or her museum for the rest of the world to see and enjoy.
