AUCTION DESCRIPTION

This an an old, authentic, deco bookend pair from the 1930's that depicts the legendary beauty, Lady Godiva. The maker of this pair is unknown, but the design was also used by Hirsch for a pair that was crafted from stone, metal and ivorine. While unmarked, the pair offered is definitely an original from that era.

These pieces feature the full-length nude riding atop her trusted stallion. For those unfamiliar with the legend of Lady Godiva, it dates back to the 11 th century and the town of Coventry, England. She was the wife of an oppressive landowner, and in order to relieve the townâe(tm)s tenants of her husbandâe(tm)s excessive taxations, she asked him to grant her wish if she rode naked through the streets of the town.

That scene is captured in bookend form, with the free-spirited lady straddling her steed as it rears up on its hind legs. The details, such as the facial features, are very simple and rough, but the overall design is quite nice. The bases feature curved arches and pillars that were popular during the Deco and Modern movements at the time.

These deco pieces are made of a spelter-type metal with an aged, copper gilded finish overtop, which has darkened and warmed a good deal over the years. T is surface wear from age and use, which is to be expected with such old pairs, and the metal itself is free from any cracks, breaks, or repairs.

Each nude dame on horseback is fully figural and stands at 6 ¼âe Tall, 5 ½âe Long, and 3 ¼âe Wide. The pair weighs a total of 3 ½ lbs. These are original and authentic 1930s pieces that would make a nice addition to any collection.
