ART DECO ILLUSTRATION - COMPACT MIRROR (BOXED) George Barbier was one of the great French illustrators of the early 20th century and one of the key artists of the Art Deco movement. . Born in Nantes, France in 1882. At the age of 29, he mounted his first exhibition in 1911 and was subsequently swept to the forefront of his profession. He produced the most exquisite, high-colour fashion plates for the couturier Paul Poiret, as well as contemporaries Lanvin, Paquin and Vionnet. In the mid-1920s he worked with Erté to design sets and costumes for the Folies Bergère and in 1929 he wrote the introduction for Erté's acclaimed exhibition and achieved mainstream popularity through his regular appearances in L'Illustration magazine. Barbier died in 1932 at the very pinnacle of his success. This compact is decorated with part of one of his most famous illustrations “Le Grand Decolletage” produced in 1921. This is a round double mirror in a goldtone metal. Inside there are two mirrors - one plain and one magnifying. Comes in its original presentation box which is marked PAST TIMES - BARBIER COMPACT.
