CONDITION Excellent
ISSUED 1930’s SIZE 5 ½ INCHES TALL MAKER KARL ENS VOLKSTEDT BOX NO AVAILABILITY EXTREMELY RARE This is a very rare perfect Pierrot by Karl Ens. It is hand numbered on the bottom 4742 or 4442 (it is hand etched into the porcelain and hard to read). Measuring 5 ½ inches tall, it is in EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH NO CHIPS, CRACKS, REPAIRS OR CRAZING ANYW Entirely handpainted by skilled artisans at the Volkstedt factory in Germany, it beautifully captures the drama surrounding the lonely clown. As the story goes, this mime loses the love of his life Columbine, to the Harlequin. With his hand clutching his broken heart, he tilts his head skyward as if asking if the pain will ever go away. Dressed as a jester in a flowing white suit with a ruffled navy collar, he leans on his mandolin or guitar for support. Notice the palest of tint on his ears and graceful hands in contrast to the stark white clown makeup on his face. Typically a Pierrot is portrayed in just black and white with a splash of red or yellow to evoke a sense of drama to the piece. This is an exception. From the green pom-pom buttons on his shirt to the fuchsia sash at his waist he has a softer feel to him. Bearing the blue windmill trademark of the Karl Ens porcelain factory in Thuringia, Germany, this figurine is stamped with the blue "E N S" windmill mark under its base. This indicates it was made between 1945 and 1972. The original sculptor was Anton BŸschelberger and it was available in a larger size also. This sculpture is very heavy and has a very small hole in the bottom leading me to believe it is MAY BE made of solid porcelain. NO RESERVE I will be listing other Carl Ens figurines in the coming weeks
