A Shelley Harmony Dripware cup and saucer in green - 1930's. Extravagantly streaked, dripped and veined and in bright colours Shelley's 'Harmony' range of drip-glazed wares were introduced at the height of the Art Deco period. The company's lead designer, Eric Slater, discovered the effect by accident in 1932. After mixing too much turpentine with the coloured glazes, he found that the glaze dripped into random patterns when he tried to paint bands onto vases. Rather than abandon the attempt, he persevered and accentuated the effects, combining contrasting or complimentary colours on the same piece. The turpentine also added variety to the colour tones, resulting in appealing graduated effects. Here we have a cup and saucer glazed using these techniques. The cup stands 6 cm high with a diameter of 8 cm at the rim. The saucer has a diameter of a little less than 14cm. The colours are strong and illustrate this glazing technique well. Please look at the photos to better appreciate the patterns the glaze forms as well as to view the condition. Both pieces are in great condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. There are a few white marks on the cup and saucer but these do not impact on the way the cup displays. I have tried to show these in the photos. If you have any questions, please just get in touch. Thank you.
