SET of 6 ART MATRYOSHKA Russian Nesting Dolls Art Matryoshka style dolls made after the fall of the Soviet Union, where artists were more free to be more creative with their themes and styles. Unique Characteristics of the set: The dolls gaze upward, not to the front. The scarves tie in the back, not at the chin. There is much more artistic shading than the assembly line type of nesting doll offers. Outstanding vintage set! Writing on the bottom: ZAO "Aofis" (company information, in Sergiev Posad, Russia) MOROZOV (artist's name) These have been appraised for between $150 - 200. The Colors: Red -- the traditional color of slavic people, used in the majority of Russian nesting dolls. Blue: color of the sky and/or winter/snow-- Russia & very cold winters. The Tradition: Nesting dolls (dolls within dolls) depict the Russian thought of blessings upon blessings waiting to be discovered. Theme Possibilities: Could just be a Russian peasant scene with farm animals, or "The Rooster Girl" story, or possibly the old Russian story of the Little Red (or brown) Hen who tries to get her friends to help her gather wheat and prepare it for bread to eat.
